Test Automation 4.0 & Connected Car

Google, stream music or start vehicle functions such as the air-conditioner via the cell phone: The connected car (“Connected Car”) will communicate in the future not just within the car body, but rather also with other cars (car-to-car) and its environment (car-to-X). With the integration of mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets and the continued development of the Internet, connected cars offer new dimensions of infotainment and comfort. In addition to comfort and fun, the advantages of connectivity can be summed up by the formula "Safety and Security": Vehicle assistance systems provide higher operational safety (“Safety”) to all road users, e.g. by automatically initiating a braking maneuver if danger is detected.


Reliability in embedded connectivity-Systems

The increasing connection, particularly the access to the Internet (“Internet of things”), will nonetheless lead to a higher vulnerability (“Security”) of the modern automobile to cyber-attacks and viruses. In addition, the digital world in the car requires highly-complex systems. Already the disruption of a single component can lead to the failure of the entire vehicle management system with potentially catastrophic consequences. Reliability and data security in the connected car thus pose immense challenges for software testing. Up to now, the various components and systems have been subjected to isolated tests by the respective developers. The time and cost expenditures for this are enormous and this approach also does not fulfil the requirements for functionality and performance within the interplay of the complex systems. In order to ensure the reliability of the entire system and to promptly recognize and eliminate any possible errors, the depiction of simultaneous processes is mandatorily required.


Automated Testrun for all Technologies

eXept Software utilizes its many years of experience from numerous projects in the telecommunications and automobile industry in order to provide an end-to-end solution for test automation in the connected car segment. It has succeeded for the first time in depicting the connection of mobile devices, back-end infrastructure and controlling devices jointly in a test scenario. Thus, the tool expecco was used, a solution for test automation, which makes it possible to integrate the different individual tests in a single test run and to substantially reduce the lead times. As the sole test tool on the market, expecco checks all components which connect the car with the outside world and test the entire system for weak points. In contrast to linear, sequential software tests, expecco can depict dynamic, non-linear processes via parallel processes, branches and loops. Back-end systems can be simulated realistically so that expecco can already be used in a very early developmental phase. This creates a decisive time advantage and sets standards for the detection of errors. Expensive rectification measures are now a thing of the past.
